11/12/05 As a kid I enjoyed Victory At Sea on the TV because it was about the war.I bought the complete set about two weeks ago. I am 60 now and was in VietNam. Not only did I enjoy watching it but as a man now ,I have even more respect for what my father and others like him did for this nation. I wish every person in our nation would see this. Thanks for the site...Yours Darrell Lang Darrell Lang Scottsdale, AZ USA - 11-5-05 I want to purchase Victory at Sea on DVD for my uncle. I have been reading various reviews and it seems that the majority of people are very negative about the sound quality of the History Channel's DVD. There seems to be other versions that are much, much less expensive and that get good reviews. I am not trying to be cheap on my uncle, but I also don't want to spend $70 on something that is really bad. Have you watched the History Channel's DVD? What do you think? Have you watched any of the others? I really want my uncle to be happy! Thanks for any help you can offer. Melanie USA - 10/25/05 Vioctory at Sea Vol 3.i had a old recording on a 33 rpm record. which i copied to a casset tape about 30 years ago. I still have the tape but i am wondering if any one had a sorce of a clean copy of the of the recording. for those that may not know it has sound effects of war along with the music. Bob Hahn Buena Vista, Colorado USA - Thank God for the Legacy the series of Victory at Sea provides for those that have been through it....... vincent casale seaford, ny USA - Sep 13, 2003 "Victory At Sea" is my all time favorite documentary program. The music developed for the show was spectacular and befitting the theme. My favorite song: "Beneath The Southern Cross" was retilted "No Other Love" and recorded by Perry Como. What a beautiful and poignant piece. This program is and will be forever lasting in the hearts and minds of those who view it. Tom Fitch Upland, CA USA - 22 June 2003 I once visited the Chief's Mess aboard the USS MISSOURI at Pearl after her final recommissioning. The Chief of the Mess looked amazingly like Winston Churchill! The feel of the place could not have been more hallowed..like a cathedral. God, the history that every teak plank oozed...and they were replaced often. A fitting thing that she now sits permanently in the harbor where it all started. God bless Missouri, fair winds and following seas. Master Chief Terry W. Sherwood, USCG (ret) Kirkland, Wa USA - 06/18/03 Being a destroyer sailor & cruiser sailor i really geta lonesome feeling for my shipmates that i had served with during the cold war & korea, the music in victory at sea brings back memories of the great atlantic ocean thanks Tip Thibodeau USN Richard tip Thibodeau Bridgeport, CT USA - This is a really great resource, I've found a lot of new information here. Nice to know there is something as good as this out there for us. Terrific site and I thank you. P.S. Can you tell me the name of the narrator on the T.V. series Victory at Sea? Regards, George George Lanzaro Northvale, NJ USA - 12-16-2002 I was there...the usual comment would be...so what...or big deal..or who cares..I care... I care about the thousands who died in the name of freedom...how has our society used this freedom...just watch the evening TV news or read the newspaper...rest in peace fellas. silvio tringali sunnyvale, ca USA - 12/3/02 This is a great web site. I've been a big fan of Victory at Sea since the late '50s, when my dad was the Sgt. Major of the Marine Barracks at Pearl Harbor (FMFPAC). His close friend was in charge of Special Services, and he would bring episodes of VAS over to the house on 16mm film and we'd watch and listen to the narration and music using a 16mm sound projector. I purchased the VAS collector's edition on VHS when it was first released, and like others, I too would like to have it on DVD. Since it's unknown if and when the series will be released on DVD for playback in the U.S., I'm about to make the transfer myself on my new Panasonic DVD recorder. Other classic VHS tapes have copied so well that the DVD copy actually seems to improve the image, probably because of the conversion of the signal from VHS analog to DVD digital. In any event, the Victory at Sea VHS collection is getting close to the top of the stack of VHS classics that are about to become part of my DVD library. Bill Mattos Fremont, CA USA - Nov. 3, 2002 The Victory at Sea series is certainly the best series about WW II that I have every seen or heard. I remember volume 1 was the first 33 1/3 lp I owned. Have listened to it and the next two so much that they are getting very scratchy and I am right now listenin to the cd. Wondering if the complete soundtrack is available on cd. Like to hear from anyone about this. Jack Schrader Manchester, ME 04351 USA - Oct 29 2002 I first saw VAS as a youth on a 10-inch Philco BW tv, and some of its images have remained with me all my life; for some reason, the films of crippled carrier planes returning home came to symbolize the entire war for me. I have the full 26 episode set (dubbed from tv) and I watch the entire series every two years or so. NO documentary since VAS, in my opinion, has come near to matching it. Like so many other of your guests, I admire your site, and, like many of them, I am also awaiting the dvd with impatience. Walt Stein USA - Leaves a lump in my throat whenever I hear the Music... Made me want to become a Naval Aviator. I hope that the boxed set comes out on DVD. LCDR Ted Rutherford Jr. USA - 08/05/2002 The "Victory At Sea" documentary captured my imagination when I was a boy and the sights and sounds of that series is still with me. I hope to find the DVD's and the CD's somewhere and recapture those moments. Your site is excellent keep up the good work. B. Davis Houston, TX USA - 31/07/02 Who remembers the names? Those who faught there; those who suffered there; those who died there. Never regret the magnificent victory of the Pacific. It's ending saved countless souls on both sides. W. L. Stunkel Lake Forest, IL USA - 7/25/2002 This is one of TV's shining moments. Wayne W richardson, tx USA - 06/27/02 VAS is a favorite of mine. I searching for an audioclip of "Guadalcanal March" to use as Page background music on my website. Robert L "Bob" Strickland Atlanta, Georgia USA - 6/10/02 Always loved Vic at Sea, ever since I first saw it on TV as a little kid back in the 50's. When I was in the Navy myself, I used to turn it way up, and sit out on the boat deck listening to the rolling music and watch the sea. Those submarines going "dit-dit-dit" always freaked me. Great site- I'm listening to my own copy right now here in the office. Bill Freeman Cucamonga, CA USA - jun 08 2002 remember fondly this series as a teenager - am converting my old record collection to mp3 and would like to recreate the original album. i have a newer version of the music on vinyl(double album) and would love to find the orginals track seqence??? jt griffin melbourne, victoria australia - 31 May 2002 My first VAS experience was in my teens (early '70s) when I stumbed upon my parents' old LP - Roger's musical score was exhilarating! However, it was only within the last year that I watched any of the series. My wife and I watched the 90-minute VHS compendium - I was familiar with WW2 historical footage, but she was stunned by the ferocity of the fighting, particularly the ack-acks against the Kamikazes, which she had never before seen. The homecoming scenes are marvelous, and emotive. I've since been borrowing the full-series videos from our library. I would recommend that every school history class that covers WW2 simply show the compendium video. Each scene is worth 100,000 words! Frank Iannarilli Barrington, RI USA - 05/09/2002 The power of raw battle footage and melodic, uplifting music makes this show a chronicle of a time we cannot forget. May it inspire the younger people of today and remind them that we can overcome all adversities facing our nation at sea and in the air. DB Edwards Rodeo, Ca USA - |
